In 2017, I bought this former ambulance – instead of an old, worn-out DHL delivery van. Funny enough, the ambulance was actually cheaper at the time, because back then nobody really wanted an ex-ambulance as a camper.
I made a few modifications, added a solar panel and a third battery – and the base vehicle was already great to work with. It came with plenty of useful features: rear air conditioning, a diesel heater, and even a water-based heating system. I added a heat bag that provides warm water – powered either by the heater or by the engine’s heat.
At the back, there’s now a bike rack, a foldable bed, a table, 150 liters of fresh water, and 100 liters of grey water. All tanks are mounted neatly under the cabin for easy access and lots of free space inside.
The engine has always been perfectly maintained, and after 100,000 km it was even replaced as a precaution – so it’s running like new.
The only catch? Welcome to Germany! Because the ambulance weighs over 3.5 tons, I needed a truck driver’s license. Downgrading wasn’t an option, as that would have reduced the payload too much.
Since then, it’s been our trusted Ambulance Camper – reliable, comfortable, and full of character.
